LISTEN: BTS' Suga collaborates with IU in pre-release track 'People Pt. 2'
BTS' Suga has clearly brought his A-game to April. Hot off the heels of his appointment as NBA's global ambassador and the announcement of his docuseries on Disney+, the rapper-producer released his collaboration song with fellow K-pop idol IU, titled "People Pt. 2."
The new track, which was unveiled on Big Hit's social media channels on April 7, is part of Suga's upcoming solo album, D-DAY, slated for release on April 21.
People Pt. 2 is a mellow fusion of Suga's laid-back rap, IU's powerful soprano vocals, and music that combines blues and jazz with a strong beat.
Its lyrics seemingly talk about how love can feel dry and predictable, with lines like "So far away, you're gone / Getting far away," and "Endless people / a love that has passed by / Is love wholly perfect on its own?" But Suga said in the last part of the music video that it instead encapsulates his emotions at the time the world was locked down due to the pandemic.
"People told me that the song tells a story I wanted to share with others and that it also seems I'm talking to myself, which is true," the musician said. "This song was written when I couldn't do anything due to COVID-19 when I thought I lost everything. So it conveys the message I wanted to tell myself."
People Pt. 2 comes three years after Suga worked with IU on her digital singe Eight which was released in May 2020.
Suga, who has recently returned to using his previous stage name "Agust D", will release his upcoming album as the third installment of his "Agust D" trilogy that features his self-titled mixtapes released in 2016 and 2020.
He is the fifth member to make a solo debut in the seven-piece boy group, following J-hope with Jack in the Box on July 15 of last year, RM with Indigo on Dec. 2, 2022, and Jimin with Face on March 24 of this year.
