Rica Peralejo reacts to 'Last Supper' at Olympics opening: 'I was not affected as a Christian'
Rica Peralejo gave her two cents about the controversial sketch at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony that ruffled the feathers of some Catholic groups and French bishops.
In a post on Threads, the retired actress said that she didn't get "Last Supper" from the criticized scene and she didn't get offended as a Christian.
The said moment involved over 12 drag artists, dancers, and a DJ sitting around a long table. In the middle was French actor Philippe Katerine, who appeared on a silver serving dish and was painted blue as he was meant to be the Greek god of wine and pleasure, Dionysus.
"I am not sure of how true that the Last Supper was actually the Feast of Dionysus. But to me it sounds more like it because hello: OLYMPICS. OLYMPIA, GREECE. Ancient Greece and Dionysus is...?" she wrote on Threads on July 28.
"Kaya no matter how much I look at it[,] hindi naman Last Supper 'yung [effect] sa'kin."
Rica then said that she was not reacted by the opening ceremony sketch, but was confused about what it was going for.
"I was not, at all, affected as a Christian for so many reasons but when I saw it I was a bit confused because it felt like it wasn’t something that matched the whole Olympic vibe as I know it haha!" she said. "Parang mas pang Superbowl-ish siya than Olympics. But then again in past years parang nagiging show/entertainment na din talaga yung Olympics."
On July 29 as her post made the rounds, the retired actress added that "mockery cannot diminish [her] God."
"I really think the unbothered treatment is best. Not on the same page with some people, not forcing but for me lang talaga.. As a performance and opening, medyo misplaced lang 'yung mga themes na absurd... Parang 'di ko ma-connect sa Sports Event. But then I thought maybe kasi ito 'yung art-art ng France? Haha. But point being na hindi ko na masyado sineryoso."
The Paris Olympics organizers have since apologized for any offense the performance caused and denied any intention to disrespect any religious group.
