BLACKPINK becomes the first girl group to be named TIME's 2022 Entertainer of the Year

TIME Magazine has named BLACKPINK as the 2022 Entertainer of the Year.

On Dec. 5, TIME Magazine revealed its list of most influential people of 2022, including BLACKPINK—the first ever girl group to be recognized for the said award.

According to the publication, BLACKPINK's success this year proved they are worthy of the title.

In August, the quartet released the single Pink Venom and got to perform it at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, making them the first K-pop act to perform on the said stage.

When they launched their second studio album Born Pink in September, they recorded a 2 million album sale and became the first female K-pop group to top the Billboard 200 list. They also hold the title of the biggest musical act to have over 83 million YouTube subscribers.

But despite these success, the girls remain down-to-earth, describing themselves as "very normal girls."

"We put in a lot of work so we could look like superwomen,” said Jennie. “We’re very normal girls, at the end of the day."

The article also described how BLACKPINK flourished both as a group and individually—Jennie released her single, Solo; Rosé launched her single album R; Lisa single, Lalisa, and Jisoo’s debut in acting by starring in the Korean drama series Snowdrop

"Blackpink has managed to become the biggest girl group in the world precisely by allowing its members to be solo stars in their own right. The group may be bigger than the sum of its parts, but each of its parts is bigger than most other pop groups’ combined efforts," they wrote.

"Side pursuits aren’t rare for K-pop groups—see the seven members of BTS now pursuing solo paths—but the scale of Blackpink’s successes, and the cohesion they maintain while regularly doing their own things, may very well be exceptional," TIME added.

The group has 20 more dates for their tour this season alone. The Philippines has yet to taste Blackpink’s ‘pink venom’ on March 2023.
