Matteo Guidicelli on marriage and jealousy: 'I know my boundaries as a husband'
Does Sarah Geronimo get jealous easily? Matteo Guidicelli explains that he simply understands the boundaries of being a husband.
"I know my boundaries as a husband and I'd like to protect that," he told Boy Abunda in a guesting over GMA Network’s Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Nov. 23. "Before we got married, we dated for a long time. I believe Sarah really protected our relationship. How? Being private and being silent from our industry."
In the same interview, Matteo shared more about his 10-year relationship with the pop star. For him, marriage is not merely a contract but a sacred covenant rooted in faith.
“The day we got married, Feb 2020, we have a covenant, not just on paper, but to our faith kumbaga,” said Matteo.
Matteo noted that in their married life of three years, disagreements are inevitable. However, he said it’s a “beautiful journey” to have a mix of happy and sad moments in a relationship.
“We argue at times, but our days are more of fixing things, like ‘Love, paano natin dadalhin ito?’” he said. “We have some discussions here and there, but they are all creative improvements for our individual being, kumbaga.”
Though one of them tends to get uptight or sad after arguments, Matteo stressed that their mindset should be geared toward their commitment.
“Why are you here in the first place? What’s the purpose of this? What is the purpose of love?” he said.
The Black Rider actor said he’s always seeking the advice of older married couples to strengthen his marriage with Sarah. One of the valuable tips he got is to “respect and listen to one another.”
He was also told about the importance of religiosity.
“Always put God in the middle, that’s very important,” he said. “When you have God in the middle, respect comes, collaboration comes, love comes.”
In the end, Matteo—who hosts Unang Hirit, stars in Black Rider, and handles G Studios—shared that his main priority is "being a husband."
"Going home to my wife, kissing her goodnight, and waking up beside her, that's the priority," he told Boy.
In the 10 years of being together, Matteo said he and Sarah are "still very much the same," but have grown "individually."
"Why? Because of the energy, the lessons we've learned from each other."
Matteo and Sarah met in 2009, with the former expressing his admiration for the latter as a performer. In 2011, they started working on projects together, including Catch Me… I’m In Love.
Sarah confirmed their relationship in 2014 during an interview on Aquino and Abunda Tonight. After six years, they announced their engagement.
The couple had a Christian ceremony on February 20, 2020, "a day full of pure love, honesty and genuine emotions," Matteo said. The evening however was met with controversy after Sarah's mom Divine reportedly came uninvited and made a scene. Matteo was even accused of punching a body guard, which he denied.
"That evening was almost perfect until some unexpected events took place, but don’t worry I never 'punched' anyone. I will forever stand up and protect my wife just as how my father would protect my whole family," he added.
