Ariana Grande tears up after being surprised with original Glinda wand from 'The Wizard of Oz'
It was a full circle moment for Ariana Grande after she got to hold the original wand used by Glinda in The Wizard of Oz movie after she played the same character in Wicked.
During her guest appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Grande became emotional after Barrymore surprised her with the wand prop used by Glinda from the 1939 film.
"I have something that's extremely exciting and special. It was owned by the Smithsonian and now it's owned in private hands. But for the purposes of our sit down, they loaned it to us. Bring out the original Glinda wand, please!" Barrymore announced during her program.
The pop star could not help but cover her mouth in shock as she was handed the glistening, star-tipped wand, which was used by the late Billie Burke in the classic film.
"Thank you so much. Are you serious right now?" Grande said as she began to tear up.
She then stood up and joked that she was taking the prop with her, saying, "Thank you, guys, it's been fun. Bye!"
Barrymore praised the singer and said that she "looks so perfect with it."
"How did you pull this off? Oh, my God, did you break in?" Grande asked.
"I have to give credit to everyone on the show because literally we were so excited about you coming here. That is the original wand from The Wizard of Oz. So there you go," Barrymore responded.
Glinda's magical stick is just one of the many valuable props from the 1939 film. The ruby slippers worn by actress Judy Garland as Dorothy are set to be sold at an auction next month, nearly 20 years after they were stolen.
Grande stars in Wicked as Galinda Upland, a popular young woman who eventually becomes Glinda the Good Witch in the future. She co-stars with Cynthia Erivo, who plays a misunderstood young woman named Elphaba Thropp born with green skin and becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, which in turn was loosely based on the classic story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels, and its 1939 movie version.
Wicked focuses on Elphaba and Glinda meeting as students in the fantastical Land of Oz, where they unexpectedly form a close bond. Their friendship, however, gets tested after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, even as their lives take very different paths.
Wicked: Part One opened in local cinemas on Nov. 20, while its second part is slated for 2025.
