Chelsea Manalo almost quit MUPH 2024 due to financial issues
Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Chelsea Manalo revealed that she almost threw in the towel due to financial troubles.
In an interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, the beauty queen opened up about the challenges she faced during her MUPH campaign, one of which was the lack of money to support her goals.
"I was at the verge of quitting na po," Manalo told Abunda. "We have to face it Tito Boy, medyo matagal 'yung competition this time. Inabot siya ng four months, so dahil ako po, I came in here as an independent, wala akong resources."
"Pera, in other words?" Abunda clarified, to which Manalo said yes.
"So dadating talaga sa point na mauubos ka, and I was almost there to quit, but because of the people who supported me, [I didn't]," she continued.
When asked to elaborate on what makes competing in MUPH so expensive, the 24-year-old model said that she experienced issues with transportation.
"I come back and forth to Bulacan, so siguro 'yung transportation, the dress, the makeup, everything. You have to provide it on your own," Manalo said.
Despite the financial challenges, she shared that her glam team was there to support her, as well as her parents. She also received help from Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando.
While Manalo wouldn't say that she experienced a point where she had zero money, she said they really had to make every amount count.
"Mayroon naman pong kakaunting nabibigay sa'kin, 'yun po 'yung pinagsasamasama lang namin just so we can have a little food, para po maitawid ko 'yung outfits ko. Dumating din sa point na I had to go and find a dress sa mga online selling," she said.
Abunda then asked about the inspiration for her evening gown, which was comprised of a white dress embellished with gems and an ostrich feather cape.
"'Yun po 'yung idea ni sir Manny Halasan. We had to come up with an idea where she is just regal, where she is ready to fight for the crown, and that she can just wear it. That moment when she steps out the stage, she is the queen," Manalo explained.
Manalo bested 52 other aspirants to succeed the reign of Michelle Dee, who emerged victorious in last year's competition.
She will now strive to win the crown on the global stage of the 73rd Miss Universe pageant that will be held in Mexico.
