A 68-year-old Spanish actress stirred controversy after she disclosed that her baby born via surrogacy is actually from her late 27-year-old son.

In an interview with local socialite magazine ¡Hola!, Ana Obregón said her son Aless Lequio García, who died of cancer in 2020, was encouraged by doctors to preserve samples of his sperm before undergoing treatment. His samples were stored in New York, the Associated Press reported.

“This girl is not my daughter, but rather my granddaughter” Obregón told ¡Hola!. “It was Aless’ last wish to bring a child into the world.”

Surrogacy is an arrangement in which the woman agrees to bear a child that someone else will raise, be it a couple or a single parent. The biological father may provide the sperm cell, though the surrogate can also be artificially inseminated with an already-fertilized egg in a process called in vitro fertilization or IVF.

Surrogacy is illegal in Spain, though surrogate children from other countries can be registered.

Obregón said the process took three years due to legalities.

Under the law, Ana is Obregón's daughter, though said Ana will "always know" that she's her grandmother.

The actress shared the magazine cover on Instagram and penned a tribute to his son in the caption.

"My Aless: I swore I would save you from cancer, and I failed you. I promised you I'd bring your daughter into the world and here she is in my arms," she wrote in Spanish.

"When I hug her, it's an indescribable feeling because it's as if I were hugging you again," she continued. "I swear that I will take care of her with the infinite love that I have to give, and from heaven, you will help me."

"You are the love of my life in heaven and your daughter is the love of my life on earth," she concluded. "I love you to death. Mom."

Obregón, who has a degree in biology, has appeared on many local television shows, including A las once en casa and Ana y los 7.

She also appeared in a American TV shows The A-Team and Who's the Boss?.
