Vice Ganda isn't offended when called 'sir' or ma'am' but reminds others to ask for preferred pronouns

Vice Ganda doesn't mind getting called "sir" or "ma'am," or referred to as "he" or "she," the TV host said on an episode of It's Showtime.

Previously coming out as non-binary, Vice educated audiences again about the importance of asking about pronouns and honorifics of people instead of just assuming based on physical appearance.

The topic of pronouns was brought up when the comedian asked a Showtime Sexy Babe contestant about getting a "Hi, miss" from strangers on the streets. Vice later joked about being called "sir" at times even when appearing more traditionally feminine.

“Di ako naooffend sa ganyan. Actually marami nga lagi nagtatalo kung paano nila ako i-aaddress, kung sir or ma’am, kung he or she—ako kasi [deadma] ako," Vice said.

However, he reminded that this isn't the case for everybody. "Yung iba kailangan mong tanungin how to be addressed kasi siyempre mahirap i-base sa itsura lang."

Asking for preferred pronouns and honorifics is important for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals as misgendering can cause dysphoria. Non-binary persons like Vice don't fit into the gender binary or categories of "man" or "woman" and can look and present however they like.
