Jane Fonda says Jennifer Lopez ‘never apologized’ for cutting her face during slap scene
Jane Fonda revealed that Jennifer Lopez didn’t say sorry to her when she cut her skin for real during their slap scene in the 2005 romantic-comedy film Monster-in-Law.
Recounting the memorable moment in her recent guest appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she said: “Well, the thing that first comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene. I slap her, she slaps me, I slap her. Well, as per Jennifer, she has this enormous diamond ring."
“When she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow,” she revealed.
“And she’s never apologized,” she added while shaking her head, which left the audience in shock and laughter.
In that particular scene, Viola (Jane) attempted to call off the wedding of her son Kevin (Michael Vartan) and fiancée Charlotte (Jennifer). The hilarious slapping scene took place during Kevin and Charlotte’s special day, when Viola decided to show up in a white dress instead of a bridesmaid dress. Starting from poking, their fight escalated into a slapping match.
In the film, Jennifer’s character quickly apologized to Viola after slapping her, to which she replied: “You don’t go and slap somebody and then apologize, get some backbone!”
J.Lo previously reacted to their slapping scene in a 2019 vlog. "We talked about how we are gonna do this over and over again, I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way," she said at the time.
The On The Floor singer recalled how the veteran actress encouraged her to just do her thing then. "She was like, 'Just hit me. Don’t worry about it, it’s going to be fine!'"
"The scene took on a life of its own in a way we never imagined, I didn't even think we were supposed to slap each other," she said.
The singer also mentioned Jane's scar around her eyebrow following the scene, which left her "mortified."
