Korean actress Kim Soo-mi passes away at 75
South Korean actress Kim Soo-mi, who has had a career in film and television for over 50 years, has passed away at the age of 75.
According to the Seoul Seocho Police Station as reported by Korean news outlets, the veteran actress was found unconscious in her home in Seoul on Oct. 25 at 8 in the morning.
Kim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead in the emergency room, with authorities confirming that she had suffered from cardiac arrest.
Her son Jung Myung-ho further said that police attributed her death to hyperglycemic shock, a condition caused by dangerously high blood sugar levels, per The Korea Times.
However, Yonhap News Agency said that the police are still investigating the exact circumstances of her death.
Prior to the tragedy, Kim had already been experiencing a decline in her health. Back in May, she was forced to put a stop to all the projects she had been doing after being hospitalized due to accumulated fatigue. At the time, she was performing in the musical stage play My Mother.
Kim is remembered for her prolific career in the Korean entertainment scene. She entered showbusiness when she joined a talent contest in 1970 before being cast in the drama television series Country Diaries in 1980, which aired for nearly 20 years.
While her career began to dwindle at some point, she managed to revamp her image with her comedic talent showcased in projects such as Mapado, Meet the In-Laws, Granny's Got Talent, and the Marrying The Mafia film series.
Among her more notable films is 2011's Late Blossom, which revolves around the love story of two elderly couples. Kim was recognized as Best Supporting Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards for her portrayal of an Alzheimer's-afflicted woman.
Her final appearances in the media include the 2023 film Marrying the Mafia: Returns and the 2022 series Behind Every Star.
