HBO celebrates ‘Game of Thrones’ Iron Anniversary
Can you believe that it’s been a decade since HBO’s Game of Thrones first aired?
The ground-breaking epic fantasy adventure based on George R.R. Martin’s novels first debuted on April 17, 2011 and went on to become a massive hit on the small screen.
Despite ending its eight-season run last May 2019 on a sour note for many fans, there’s still some love for some series characters, like Arya Stark, Jon Snow, and Tyrion Lannister, particularly in the earlier seasons.
In celebration of a decade of Game of Thrones, HBO is celebrating an “Iron Anniversary” with a month-long series of events planned. HBO released a teaser video for the event, which you can check out below.
The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max as well as HBO Go in the Philippines, so if you’ve forgotten early episodes and are looking for something to binge-watch while in quarantine—or if you’ve never had a chance to watch the show before—now is the perfect time for a GoT “MaraThrone.”
HBO has also released a slew of specials, documentaries, a never-before seen cast reunion, exclusive cast interviews and clips. HBO will reportedly be featuring 150 behind-the-scenes videos.
The Game of Thrones Reunion Special, which was filmed during the eighth and final season of the show and which was previously only available on complete home video collections of the series, is now available to stream on HBO Max.
The two-hour special features cast members Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Sean Bean, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy and Jason Momoa, with Conan O’Brien as master of ceremonies.
HBO has also put up a Spotlight Page, which will include videos for hardcore fans, full of “Easter eggs,” aka hidden things that they might have missed previously.
There’s also some interesting Thrones-related merchandise up for grabs for collectors. Funko is joining in on the fun with its new Iron Anniversary Pops, which are available for pre-order for August 2021.
The Funko Pop figures include Ned Stark sitting on the Iron Throne, Tyrion Lannister holding a shield, Arya Stark practising her water dancing, Robb Stark with his sword, Khal Drogo holding his daggers, and Drogon, available as an Iron Deco Pop and keychain.
