‘Ready Player Two’ book synopsis, pre-orders now available
Get ready for another nostalgic, action-packed adventure in a virtual world that will propel us to the future once again.
Book author Ernest Cline has released the first plot synopsis for Ready Player Two, the highly-anticipated sequel to his 2011 science fiction novel Ready Player One which inspired the blockbuster Steven Spielgberg film.
The dystopian novel set in 2045 follows protagonist Wade Watts who embarks on an adventure through the virtual reality software OASIS to escape the desolation of the real world. The New York Times bestseller managed to capture the essence of what video games mean for a large portion of the population.
The sequel’s synopsis was posted on Ready Player Two’s Twitter account on Friday, Oct. 9, following the book’s New York Comic Con panel. The sequel starts shortly after the end of the first novel and reads as follows:

An unexpected quest. Two worlds at stake. Are you ready?
Days after OASIS founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS more wondrous – and addictive – than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle and a new quest, a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize, and an unexpected, impossibly powerful, new and dangerous rival awaits, one who will kill millions to get what he wants. Wade’s life and the future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time, the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance.
Following the first novel’s success, Ready Player One was adapted into a film of the same name by Steven Spielberg in 2018, starring Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Samantha Cook/Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento and Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow/The Curator, among others.
Despite some major differences from the book, the SciFi action-adventure film was received positively and considered a return to form for the legendary director. The blockbuster film brought back the movie magic of Spielberg classics from the 1980s, including that sense of wonder and adventure along with a good mix of modern CGI, video game cameos and lots of pop culture references. There’s no news yet regarding a film sequel.
I absolutely loved reading the first book and can’t wait for this sequel. With everyone stuck home in quarantine and the boom in the video game industry, more people will probably be able to relate to the idea of escaping to virtual worlds.
According to a report by Geek Tyrant, Ready Player Two will be available in hardcover, paperback, ebook and in an audiobook format read by Wil Wheaton, who previously brought Cline’s other bestsellers, Ready Player One and Armada to life. If Cline sticks to tradition, readers can expect to find hidden clues embedded in the novel leading to an online scavenger hunt.
Pre-orders for Ready Player Two are currently available on Amazon. The book arrives on shelves on November 24, 2020.
