Disney Plus launching IMAX enhanced format for MCU movies
The Disney Plus streaming service is unleashing the power of IMAX at home.
Disney announced Tuesday (Nov. 9) that it is boosting its expanded screen aspect ratio for a select number of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films to give viewers a more immersive moviegoing experience in the safety of people's homes.

Thirteen MCU movies including Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, which will be released on the platform this week, will be upgraded to IMAX Enhanced starting Friday, November 12.
While IMAX generally uses the 1.43:1 frame format, IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio is 1.90:1, which is relatively close to the 16:9 ratio used in televisions.
Marvel movies, on the other hand, often have wider aspect ratios; however, many of these films in IMAX theaters feature 1.90:1 sequences shot with IMAX certified cameras to provide a longer view, which is exactly what Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were shot in.
The IMAX enhanced format is known for showing up to 26 percent more of the screen compared to the standard format.

- Avengers: Endgame
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Black Panther
- Black Widow
- Captain America: Civil War
- Captain Marvel
- Doctor Strange
- Iron Man
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2nd
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
It’s going to be a big week for Disney with Disney Plus Day officially happening on Friday, Nov. 12.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that there'll be updates regarding the avaiability of Disney Plus to other Asia Pacific regions including the Philippines. While there’s been no confirmation or date regarding the availability of the streaming service in the country, the Disney Plus Philippines updated website and expansion into other Asian countries could signal that Disney Plus could be coming to our home country as well.
Last October, the Walt Disney Company held a special regional press and partner event for its Asia and Pacific regions where it unveiled an extensive slate of global, regional, and local language content for Disney Plus.
The streaming service is currently available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, with upcoming launches in South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan this November 2021.
