Benedict Cumberbatch to reprise role as Doctor Strange in next 'Spider-Man' film

Benedict Cumberbatch will reportedly reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the upcoming Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will be joining the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise to serve as a new mentor to Holland’s Peter Parker in lieu of Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man became the father figure to Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming while Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury filled the mentor role in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Apart from giving Parker a new mentor in the upcoming superhero film, The Hollywood Reporter said that this also gives Holland a chance to perform with seasoned actors. Prior to Cumberbatch, it was previously reported that Jamie Foxx will return as Electro in the next film. Foxx played the villain in Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

The Hollywood Reporter said that the sequel to Cumberbatch Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to begin filming this month in London while Holland’s Spider-Man 3 is set to start shooting in Atlanta before the end of October. However, there’s still no word yet when and where Cumberbatch will shoot his scenes.

As of this writing, The Hollywood Reporter said that both Marvel and Sony had no comment on Cumberbatch’s casting.

Directed by Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man Far From Home), the upcoming film featuring the web slinger is slated to hit the big screen on December 17, 2021. The cast of the still untitled Spider-Man sequel includes Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Tony Revolori and Jacob Baton.
