The NeverEnding Story is getting a live-action remake!

Film and television production company See-Saw Productions announced in an X post on Wednesday, March 20 that they are set to make a series of live-action films based on Michael Ende's original novel.

"Today we are unbelievably excited to announce that See-Saw Films is going into partnership with Michael Ende Productions to develop and produce live action films adapted from Michael Ende’s The NeverEnding Story," the studio wrote in a statement.

Ende's 1979 fantasy novel was previously adapted into a live-action film back in 1984, which had Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn as its lead roles. Alan Oppenheimer meanwhile provided the voices of Falkor, Gmork, and others. The film became a cherished cult classic after its release.

The NeverEnding Story centers on a lonely and imaginative boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux, who gets neglected by his father following his mother's death. After finding a book called The Neverending Story, Bastian starts reading it in the school attic.

In a twist of events, he physically enters the world of Fantastica, which is being threatened by a sinister force called "The Nothing" that destroys everything it touches—and he is the one chosen to save it.

See-Saw producer Iain Canning told Variety that they are keen on making live-action films based on the book as "the story is both timely and timeless, and really has an opportunity to be told in a fresh way."

"Part of the specialness of the book is that you can go back to it at different ages in your life and find different levels of meaning. So how wonderful that we have this opportunity to do a fresh perspective that will have new layers and meanings," he said.

"We just believe that every generation deserves their own journey into Fantastica," he added.

Further details, including the release date and casting for the new adaptation have yet to be revealed.

See-Saw Productions is known for adapting literary works into films and television shows. Their most recent success is the romantic comedy-drama series Heartstopper, which was released on Netflix.
