Tobey Maguire returns to big screen after 7 years

The Maguire drought is finally over. After seven years of no live-action film appearances, Tobey Maguire is back on the big screen for a star-studded film.

Fans of the original Spider-Man trilogy star last saw him on screen with 2014’s Pawn Sacrifice, and a small voice cameo for the 2017 family animated movie, Boss Baby. Recently, Maguire is reported to be joining the ensemble for the new film, Babylon. 

Among the big names joining the film are Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and the newest additions, Olivia Wilde and Phoebe Tonkin. The film is also co-starred by the following: Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Lukas Haas, Flea, Rory Scovel, Samara Weaving, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne, and Damon Gupton.

Babylon takes place in the 1920s during one of Hollywood’s greatest transitions from silent films to talkies: films with sound. Babylon will be Damien Chazelle’s—the director of Whiplash, La La Land and First Man—fourth film.

Olivia Hamilton, Chazelle’s wife, is producing the Paramount film along with Marc Platt and Matthew Plouffe, while Tobey Maguire, Adam Siegel, and Helen Estabrook are the executive producers.

Reports of Maguire returning to the big screen first started when rumors of him reprising his role as the 2002 film Peter Parker stirred, alongside Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, for the upcoming MCU movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which stars the latest owner of the Spider-Man mantle, Tom Holland. However, such rumors should be taken with a grain of salt for there is no official confirmation and Holland, who is notorious for spilling MCU spoilers, has denied Maguire and Garfield’s involvement in the film.

No official details have been provided on what Maguire and the other new actors’ roles are in Babylon. In addition, the film’s plot is still pretty vague as of now.

Babylon is set to begin shooting next week and is slated for a December 2022 or January 2023 release in theaters.
