Netflix has released a brand new teaser trailer for its upcoming animated fantasy film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime origin story that expands on the world of The Witcher.

This series tells a prequel story set before the events of the first season of the live-action series, focusing on the adventures of Geralt’s mentor and friend, Vesemir.

The official synopsis reads:

“Before Geralt, there was his mentor Vesemir—a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin. But when a strange new monster begins terrorizing a politically-fraught kingdom, Vesemir finds himself on a frightening adventure that forces him to confront the demons of his past.”

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ is written and produced by Beau DeMayo and co-produced by ‘The Witcher’ Showrunner and Executive Producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and Studio Mir’s Kwang Il Han who is also directing.

The South Korean animation studio, Studio Mir, is known for animating most of the American TV series The Legend of Korra, Netflix series Dota: Dragon’s Blood, as well as films Big Fish & Begonia and Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, among other works.

Along with the new trailer, Netflix revealed the voice cast and released character images for the anime origin story.

The Divergent Series star Theo James voices Vesemir, who grew up as a servant on a nobleman’s estate, working long days for too little coin. He yearns to break free of his social standing and to explore the Continent to find his destiny.

Lara Pulver (DOTA: Dragon's Blood, Sherlock) voices Tetra Gilcrest, a powerful sorceress who is descended from one of the Continent’s first mages, and believes magic connects all things of beauty. She and her followers work to keep peace on the Continent by ensuring that magic is not abused.

Graham McTavish (Castlevania, Outlander) is Deglan. Deglan was raised on the harsh, unforgiving Skellige Isles and is the hardened warrior-leader of the witchers. He is fiercely loyal to his “boys,” and committed to doing whatever is necessary to protect them.

Mary McDonnell (BattleStar Galactica, Major Crimes) voices Lady Zerbst, a Kaedwen noblewoman who inherited her husband’s seat on the king’s advisory council after his death. She has since risen to become one of the king’s most trusted advisors, and a fierce supporter of the witchers.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will premiere on August 23 on Netflix.
