Drag Race Philippines queens and other local queer artists understood the assignment and delivered at Vice Ganda's UnkabogaBALL 2022, coming in gag-worthy outfits under the night's "Philippine History" theme.
The 2022 party gathered the biggest LGBTQ+ names and talents in the entertainment industry on Dec. 10 in Cebu. While many queer artists and allies had netizens in awe of their looks, Marina Summers and Eva Le Queen had some of the most note-worthy ones.
'Drag is political'
Drag Race PH runner-up Marina Summers bagged the title of Star of the Night, as well as a cash prize of P100,000 for her take on Imelda Marcos at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The gorgeous white terno gown, which the Marcos matriarch is known to wear, looked clean and pristine in front. But as the queen turned around, the back revealed blood stains and splatters.
"The GAG is the dress has an attached speaker sa loob tapos while she's walking down the red carpet, may nag-pplay na audio ng mga taong umiiyak," stylist Paul Sese said on Twtitter.
Marina also revealed the backstory of her gown on social media, saying: "This is the part of Philippine History that they are trying to conceal with glamour and misinformation. This is the story that should never be forgotten," she said with the hashtags "#DragIsPolitical" and "#NeverForget."
Paul also added that they hired a personal security guard for Marina to watch the diamond earrings and necklace set the drag queen was wearing, which was said to be worth P1.5 million.
Meanwhile, Eva Le Queen came dressed in an all-black number covering her face, a la Kim Kardashian at the MET Gala circa 2021, with a headpiece resembling the ABS-CBN logo. This was a nod to the network's shutdown in May 2020.
"Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it," Eva said, quoting Winston Churchill.
"Hindi man ako nakakain, the message was loud and clear. Never forget. 💙💚❤️," she added.
Another Drag Race PH queen, Viñas DeLuxe, transformed into a drag version of the GomBurZa priests. She donned a black dress with ropes around her neck and arms. Two mannequin shoulders in full glam sat on her shoulders.
"Philippine history ang theme at una talagang pumasok sa isip ko is #GomBurZa but make it DRAAAG!!" she said about her outfit.
Local queer artist Pia Paolo stunned in an ensemble honoring the culture and history of Caraganons. Her gold dress was accentuated by a boat-like shoulder piece and a majestic headpiece.
"Mga higala, I am representing Butuan and Agusan pride, The Golden Tara," she wrote on Instagram.
"This 21-karat gold statue of a Hindu-Malayan goddess was found on Wawa river and was considered to be one of the most important discoveries in the Philippine history archaeology. On my shoulders, you can see the historical Balangay Boat which was uncovered in the land of Butuan."
For the UnkabogaBALL, Cebuana transgender beauty queen Fuschia Anne Ravena brought Magwayen, the primordial Visayan goddess of the sea and water, to life.
"She personifies the great wide ocean that covers the entire world. Folklorists and historians still debate if Magwayen is a female of male deity. Hence, I went with this look. Her duality and vagueness best represents me as a trans woman," the Miss International Queen 2022 said.
