Send in the Dalmatians!
Watch the edgy new trailer of Disney's 'Cruella' starring Emma Stone
Emma Stone seems to be getting the Joker treatment as the brilliantly bad and mad Cruella de Vil in Disney's latest film featuring the villain's backstory.
Cruella is the studio's prequel to 101 Dalmatians that serves an an origin story for the puppy-stealing villainess.
Walt Disney Studios dropped the official trailer late Wednesday (Feb. 17) on social media channels, and Disney fans are loving Stone’s punk rock look and the overall edgy tone of the film.
The live-action movie focuses on a younger version of Cruella de Vil, the iconic villain of the 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians and the live-action adaptation 101 Dalmatians (1996) and sequel 102 Dalmatians (2000), who was famously played by Glenn Close, and who now serves as an executive producer for the new film.
This time around, Oscar-award winning actress Emma Stone steps into the shoes and fur coat of the titular character.
A day before the trailer dropped, the studio also shared a teaser poster which features the La La Land actress rocking Cruella's signature two-toned hairstyle. “Hello, Cruel World,” the caption reads on Instagram. “New trailer tomorrow.”

According to the film's official synopsis, Disney's all-new live-action feature film covers the "rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious—and notoriously fashionable—villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil."
"Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, the film follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella."
It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news or seen any photos from Disney after they shared a first look of Stone as Cruella during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California in August 2019. In that image, Stone sported Cruella's black-and-white hairstyle, dark eye makeup and a red lip while holding the leashes of three Dalmatians in the photo, while co-stars Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser—who portray Cruella's lackeys Jasper and Horace, respectively—are seen in the background.
Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis.
