Fake Safari and Google Chrome updates put Mac users at risk. Here's how you can stay safe
Beware Mac users, your Apple devices may be put at risk because of scammers who are using fake browser updates for Mac to steal your personal information.
Earlier this year, a new malware called Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS) emerged online that specifically preys on Apple users.
Once injected into the system, it can bypass your gadgets' security system and get its hands on your iCloud Keychain passwords, credit card details, wallets, files, and more, according to The Times of India.
While it was already a big threat back then, it became more potent when the scammers disguised it as Safari and Chrome browser updates for Mac called "ClearFake."
The way it works is that the scammers are luring potential victims to download the updates by creating fake websites and offering users to install them on their systems.
To make the scheme effective, the malicious actors have designed the Safari and Google Chrome templates to mimic the official Apple website.
How to stay safe
If you're not tech-savvy, you can easily fall victim to the pitfalls set by such scammers. However, it can be prevented with with proper awareness and precautions.
The most important thing that you should keep in mind is that you should always stick to downloading software and installing updates from trusted and known sources. The Safari app can be updated through the Apple App Store while Google Chrome can be downloaded through its official website.
