Sony releases Japanese trailer for Morbius, a Spider-Man spin-off movie
Nocturnal beings beware, there’s a new bat in town.
Sony Pictures has just released a two-minute trailer for Morbius, an upcoming Marvel film about an anti-hero with vampiric/bat-like superpowers.
The new trailer begins with Oscar winner Jared Leto, who plays the title role, introducing his character to Marvel fans while teasing the upcoming movie’s role in Sony’s expanding Spider-Verse films. This trailer has English audio with Japanese subtitles. There’s also a ton of new footage regarding Morbius’ skills and abilities, as well as clues to his unique place in the Spider-Verse.
Morbius follows the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who tried to cure his rare blood disease only to become afflicted with a form of vampirism that gave him superior strength, fangs, and an insatiable taste for blood.
The upcoming Morbius film is Sony’s adaptation of the Marvel anti-hero Morbius the Living Vampire, a character created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, and who first appeared in 1971’s Amazing Spider-Man #101. In the comics, Morbius clashed with Spider-Man several times, though eventually earned several of his own books where he had a more heroic arc. He has an ongoing feud with the character Blade the Vampire Hunter in the comics.
Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film stars Jared Leto (Dr. Morbius), Matt Smith (Loxias Crown), Adria Arjona (Martine Bancroft), Jared Harris (Morbius’ mentor), and Tyrese Gibson (FBI agent).
Morbius is one of a handful from several Spider-Man spin-off projects in development at Sony, including the upcoming Venom sequel, and another secret project that Olivia Wilde will direct.
Morbius will make its international premiere on Mar. 19, 2021.
