Looking for a streaming site for your grandparents to watch classic films made in the '40s or '50s? Or are you a fan of nostalgic black and white films yourself?

Master director Mike de Leon has uploaded a rare collection of classic Filipino films, including precious films from the pre-war cinema era, that anyone can watch for free on his Vimeo account, Citizen Jake.

The account currently has a library of 100 videos most of which were films from the legendary LVN studio owned by De Leon’s family.

According to a post by Cinema Centenario, the studio was responsible for the creation of notable films including Orasang Ginto (1946), the first Filipino post-World War II movie; Batalyon XIII (1949), Prinsipe Amante (1950), Waray-Waray (1954) starring Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa, the studio’s famous loveteam that time; and Tunay na Ina (1939).

The revival of these classics coincides with the celebration of the centenary of the Philippine movie industry this 2020.

De Leon himself has helmed award-winning films such as Kisapmata (1981), Batch ‘81 (1982) and Sister Stella L. (1984). The veteran director’s account on the online video streaming site is named after his last movie, Citizen Jake (2018) a Philippine noir crime drama film which starred GMA host Atom Araullo.

The list of free-to-watch black and white classics and digitally-restored films include the work of some of Philippine cinema’s esteemed directors, including Susana C. de Guzman, Manuel Conde, Manuel Silos, and National Artist for Theater and Film Lamberto V. Avellana.

Many in the selection were prominent and award-winning movies during their time and featured veteran actors in Philippine cinematic history such as Fernando Poe, Sr., Blanca, de Villa, Rosa Rosal, Charito Solis, Eddie Rodriguez, Rogelio Dela Rosa, Carmen Rosales, and more.

Here's a list of the legendary films ranging from 1939 up to 1997, as listed by Cinema Centenario. Click on each title to take you to the film:
