'Money Heist' spin-off series 'Berlin' sets release date

The long wait is almost over, Money Heist fans, as the hit show's upcoming spin-off series, Berlin, finally has a release date.

First announced in December 2021, the new Netflix show is the prequel to the popular Spanish series La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) that spanned five seasons—released from May 2017 to December 2021—and amassed millions of fans all over the world.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the streaming giant revealed Berlin's premiere date in a trailer starring Pedro Alonso as he returns as the titular character in the upcoming show. Unlike the smart and highly efficient second-in-command that Money Heist fans have always adored, Berlin is depicted in the spin-off series as a rather young, enthusiastic, and carefree thief.

In the latest sneak peek released by Netflix, Berlin is shown sketching out a daring heist to steal a whopping €44 million from a big-time auction house in Paris in a single afternoon.

Things get complicated (and more suspenseful) when he becomes involved with the wife of the man he's attempting to rob, The action-packed clip ends with the announcement of the show's premiere, which is on Dec. 29.

Here is the official synopsis of the much-awaited series:

There are only two things that are sure to turn a bad day into a great one: love, and a payday worth millions. They're what keep Berlin going through his golden years, a time when he still has no inkling of his illness and hasn’t gotten trapped like a rat in the Spanish Mint. This is where he starts preparing one of his most extraordinary heists: making jewels worth 44 million disappear like some sort of magic trick. To do it, he’ll enlist the help of one of the three gangs he’s ever stolen with.

Joining Berlin in the thrilling escapade is his new gang: Damián (Tristán Ulloa), a philanthropic professor and Berlin’s confidant, Keila (Michelle Jenner) who is an eminence in electronic engineering, a kamikaze named Cameron (Begoña Vargas), Berlin’s faithful squire Roi (Julio Peña Fernández), whileItziar Ituño and Najwa Nimri returns to o their roles as policewomen Raquel Murillo and Alicia Sierra, respectively. 

During this year's Netflix "Tudum" global fan event held last July, Money Heist creator Álex Pina said that Berlin is "a trip through the golden age of the character when he robbed around Europe crazy in love."

But more than the crimes, tension, travel, and romance, fans can also look forward to getting a dose of humor from the new series. “That’s the most surprising, the comedy. You’re going to make people laugh a lot,” Pina said.
