'Bambi' horror version in the works by makers of 'Winnie the Pooh' horror film
It seems that the makers of the Winnie the Pooh horror film have made it their mission to ruin everyone's childhood as they are set to work on a "dark retelling" of Bambi, the sweet deer who is most known for starring in the beloved Disney movie.
ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions revealed their upcoming project to horror news site Dread Central. Titled Bambi: The Reckoning, the film will begin production in late January next year and will be produced by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who helmed the already notorious Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.
In case you don't know, the story of Bambi did not originate from the popular Disney classic released in 1942. Rather, it came from the 1928 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods by Austrian author and hunter Felix Salten.
The film and the novel generally trace the life of the male roe deer from his childhood to the death of his mother to growing up and standing up against the hunters in the woods.
While plot details have yet to be fully disclosed, director Scott Jeffrey said that the film will take inspiration from The Ritual, a British horror film that features an ancient and exceptionally terrifying monster.
"The film will be an incredibly dark retelling of the 1928 story we all know and love. Finding inspiration from the design used in Netflix’s The Ritual, Bambi will be a vicious killing machine that lurks in the wilderness. Prepare for Bambi on rabies!" Jeffrey told the news outlet.
The horror adaptation comes as the character of Bambi fell into the public domain on Jan. 1 this year, meaning anyone is allowed to create their original interpretations of the deer and use them in any creative work.
However, since Disney's Bambi film is not in the public domain, the filmmakers would have to be careful not to copy any of its elements such as Bambi's design.
