Synopsis confirms plot details of Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series

Back in November 2017, Amazon bought the television rights for The Lord of the Rings for a hefty sum of $250 million.

Since then, fans worldwide have been patiently waiting, eager to have a glimpse of the new Middle-Earth series based on the novel by English high fantasy author J. R. R. Tolkien.

Ever since the show was announced, there have been a plethora of rumors surrounding the storyline of the upcoming show. Many theories were centered on the life of a young Aragorn, his childhood as a young ward fostered in Rivendell by Elrond. Others suggested that his lineage as descendant of Elendil and Heir of Isildur will be explored. Well, it turns out that these estimates were wildly off the mark.

After more than three years, the show’s plot details have finally been revealed, thanks to the official synopsis courtesy of fandom portal TheOneRing.net.

According to the leaked info, the series is described as:

"Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

According to the leaked synopsis, the new series will take place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth, more than a thousand years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies. The show will revolve around an ensemble of characters, both new and familiar figures.

Amazon released a teaser map back in February 2019 to give fans an early peek of the topography where the show is bound to take place.

The Lord of the Rings series on Amazon Prime Video is planned to have a five-season production worth at least $1 billion, becoming the most expensive television show yet. Each season is planned to have 8 to 10 episodes. Director J.A. Bayona was hired to helm the two-part pilot episode. Filming for both Seasons 1 and 2 begins this month in New Zealand.
