Netflix’s own Britney Spears documentary reportedly in the works

Shortly after the documentary Framing Britney Spears drew a global wave of support for the singer, Netflix has announced that it is producing its own film for the pop superstar.

According to Bloomberg, the upcoming film will be directed by filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, who specializes in true-crime documentaries. Her latest project was Netflix’s miniseries How to Fix a Drug Scandal released on April 1, 2020.

Bloomberg reported that Netflix has been working on its own film before rival Hulu and its partner New York Times released Framing Britney Spears on Feb. 5 this year.

The upcoming Netflix film follows the success of Hulu’s documentary, which put a spotlight on Britney’s battle for freedom from conservatorship, wherein a judge appoints a person to oversee the financial affairs or daily activities of an individual deemed to have physical or mental limitations. From 2008 until today, Britney’s conservatorship is rigidly controlled by her father, Jamie, with whom she since had a strained relationship. 

The film, which also tackled Spears' negative media coverage, has led her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake to post a public apology on Instagram, admitting his mistreatment of the superstar. Media personality Perez Hilton likewise expressed his regrets for treating Spears badly in the past in an interview with Good Morning Britain. 

Netflix’s documentary about the Pop Princess still has no title and release date as of this time, but it’s definitely one to watch out for.
