Veteran journalist Rina Jimenez David passes away at 68
Veteran journalist Regina "Rina" Jimenez David has died. She was 68 years old.
In a Facebook post, her daughter Miya announced that she passed away on Sunday morning, Nov. 12 due to an undisclosed illness.
Jimenez graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in 1976, where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of The Varsitarian—its official student publication—from 1975 to 1976.
She joined Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1988 as a journalist and columnist for At Large.
Jimenez was a strong advocate for women, particularly women's rights and health issues.
Among her notable works is Women at Large, which is a collection of her pieces from her regular PDI column. She talked about sexual harassment, abortion, among other issues that "only women can fully understand." It became a finalist for the Philippine National Book Awards in 1994.
She was also known for her books like The Filipino Woman in the 21st Century: A Collection of Essays and Nightmare Journeys: Filipina Sojourns through the World of Trafficking.
Jimenez received various accolades for her brilliance in journalism and advocacy for women. She won Best Columnist for Excellence in Population Reporting at the 2004 Global Media Awards as well as a TOWNS Award in 2013—a recognition that's given to Filipinas who "have shown outstanding dedication, exceptional talent, and a history of contributing positively to society."
