LOOK: Fil-Am rapper Saweetie stuns in custom Francis Libiran at FIBA World Cup 2023 Draw
Lovely in lilac!
Filipino-American rapper Saweetie (real name: Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper) turned heads at the recently concluded FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Draw in a custom creation by Francis Libiran, who made it a point that it would capture that “Saweetie attitude.
The singer opted for a lilac deep sweetheart neckline corset dress that she matched with a dupioni silk skirt with a thigh-high slit, proving that one could never go wrong with a hint of leg.
While Saweetie grew up in the United States, she was born to a Filipino-Chinese mother from Tondo, Manila.
At a press conference for FIBA, Saweetie said that the Filipino culture is in her DNA. “It’s my roots. I’m proud of where I’m from, who I am. My mom, and her brothers and sisters, and my lolo and lola, they’re all immigrants so I was raised in a real, traditional Filipino household and I’m proud of that because it actually made me the woman I am today,” she said.
“I think it’s important that we represent that, especially in an industry where we don’t see that many Filipinos. I love showing a part of my heritage, especially my mom and her family, because they brought me to where I am today,” she added.
At the 2021 Met Gala, which carried the theme “American Independence,” Saweetie paid homage to her Filipino roots in a Christian Cowan number showcasing the colors of the Philippine flag. The train also featured black and red hues to represent the Black American heritage flag.
