Netflix to launch interactive daily quiz show ‘Trivia Quest’ this April

Published Mar 08, 2022 1:51 pm

Move over, Wordle. Netflix is launching the first-ever daily quiz show called Trivia Quest starting April 1.

The interactive series will present new multiple-choice questions around topics in history, art, science, entertainment, and more while weaving a story into the experience.

Based on the popular mobile game Trivia Crack by Etermax, said to be the #1 multi-platform trivia franchise in the world, Trivia Quest promises to put a different spin on the popular game show format and expand on Netflix’s ongoing gaming initiative.

While Netflix has carried library episodes of the classic game show Jeopardy!Trivia Quest will be the platform's first original daily game show with an interactive twist.

Andy Weil, Netflix’s VP of Comedy Series and Interactive Programming explained how the series will work in a news release published on Thursday, Mar. 4.

“Starting April 1—and no, this isn’t an April Fool’s Joke—we will launch one new episode every day throughout the month (30 total). Adapting Trivia Crack’s acclaimed game play, each episode features 24 questions (12 standard and 12 hard) across categories including science, history, entertainment, sports, art and geography. Each question is a multiple-choice play, with four potential answers to choose from.”

According to Weil, similar to Netflix’s other interactive specials like Black Mirror’s “Bandersnatch,” and You vs. Wild, Trivia Quest will also have a narrative twist.

By answering trivia questions correctly, viewers will be able to help the hero Willy to rescue the animated citizens of Trivia Land from the Evil Rocky, a villain bent on hoarding all knowledge in the world.

Trivia Quest will not be offering any real-world prizes, but viewers can replay an episode to earn more points and make progress towards a "definitive ending."

The daily quiz show will be available on all devices that support interactive Netflix material, including smart TVs, streaming media players, game consoles, computer browsers, Android phones and tablets, iPhones, iPads and iPod touches.

Netflix is quick to point out that Trivia Quest is an "experiment" to find new ways to entertain viewers and for members to interact with Netflix.

Netflix has released a number of interactive specials over the years, with 18 titles available as of March 2022, including the recently released Cat Burglar from Charlie Brooker, and other kid-oriented game-like specials like Minecraft: Story Mode.

Aside from Netflix’s interactive shows, the streaming platform has also launched a number of games that subscribers can download and play for free, outside the Netflix app without any ads.

As of March 2022, there are 14 titles under Netflix Games, including RPGs Stranger Things 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game and Dungeon Dwarves; puzzle games Knittens and Krispee Street; sports games Bowling Ballers, Shooting Hoops, Wonderputt Forever; the arcade game Teeter Up; tabletop games Card Blast and Dominoes Cafe; racing game Asphalt Xtreme; strategy card game (Arcanium: Rise of Akhan) and rhythm runner Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story.
