James Bond actor Sir Sean Connery dies at 90

The actor who portrayed iconic super spy James Bond, Sir Sean Connery, has passed away. He was 90.

According to a BBC report, Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep in Nassau in the Bahamas, with family around him. He leaves behind a legendary acting legacy spanning more than 50 years.

No other details have been given regarding his death, but the BBC report added that Sir Sean's son, Jason, communicated that the actor had been "unwell for some time."

Sir Sean broke into pop culture as the very first actor to portray James Bond on the big screen in the 1962 film, Dr. No. The character was based on a series of spy novels created by British author Ian Fleming.

He then went on to play the character in six more Bond films, namely, From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds are Forever (1971), and 1983's Never Say Never Again.

Sir Sean is not only remembered for his suave portrayal of James Bond. The Scottish actor had many memorable roles in films such as Highlander (1986), Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and The Rock (1996).

But it was Sir Sean's portrayal of weathered Irish-American Chicago police officer Jimmy Malone in The Untouchables (1987), which earned him an Academy award for Best Supporting Actor.

On his father's passing, Jason said, "A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."
