BTS and Coldplay bring ‘My Universe’ to the 2021 American Music Awards

Published Nov 22, 2021 3:29 pm

Some of the music industry’s biggest names descended upon Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater for the 2021 American Music Awards on Sunday.

International K-Pop sensation BTS emerged as the big winners of the night, winning Artist of The Year, while Butter took the Favourite Pop Song award. BTS has become the first and only Asian act to win the Artist of the Year award at the American Music Awards.

BTS performed twice during the show—on their own and with Coldplay.

Stars collided when J-Hope, Jin, V, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga, and RM of BTS took to the stage to perform My Universe with Chris Martin of the British rock band. It was BTS’ first performance with a live audience since the pandemic broke out.

BTS was also set to perform their Butter remix with Megan Thee Stallion, but the American rapper had to back out on Saturday (Nov. 20), citing “an unexpected personal matter.”

Other high-profile performers on stage during the 2021 AMAs included Bad Bunny, Carrie Underwood, Chlöe, Diplo, Jason Aldean, Jennifer Lopez, Julieta Venegas, Kane Brown, Måneskin, Mickey Guyton, New Edition, New Kids on the Block, Olivia Rodrigo, Silk Sonic, Tainy, Tyler the Creator, Walker Hayes and Zoe Wees.

Olivia Rodrigo, who led the pack this year with seven nominations, including Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year, made her debut on the AMA stage with a moving rendition of Traitor. With a guitar in-hand, Rodrigo delivered a moody acoustic version of the heartbreak ballad.

Five-time nominee Bad Bunny, who performed in tandem with Tainy and Venegas, delivered a high-tech and futuristic performance with their melancholic track, Lo Siento BB, which is featured off of Tainy's debut album, Data

Carrie Underwood teamed up with Jason Aldean for an amazing rendition of their duet, If I Didn’t Love You. Underwood was nominated for two awards at the show tonight, Favorite Country Artist—which she won—and Favorite Inspirational Artist.

It was a total blast from the past as ’80s and ’90s boy bands New Kids on the Block and New Edition faced off with their respective hits in an event billed by the show as the “Battle of Boston.” Fans were treated to a medley of throwback hits, including You Got It (The Right Stuff), Candy Girl, Step by Step, and Mr. Telephone Man, to name a few.

Jennifer Lopez shut down the 2021 AMAs with a romantic performance of her new single, On My Way, from her upcoming rom-com Marry Me.

The world’s largest fan-voted awards show, the 2021 AMAs aired live globally on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC (Monday, 9:00 a.m. PHT) across linear and digital platforms in more than 120 countries and territories.
