First teaser for live-action ‘Cowboy Bebop’ series captures stylized anime action
The live-action series adaptation of Cowboy Bebop finally has a teaser trailer. Well, sort of.
After months of updates on the cast, on-set photos, and theme songs, Netflix has finally unveiled the first video footage Tuesday (Oct. 19) for its live-action Cowboy Bebop series.
Titled “The Lost Session” the highly stylized clip shows off Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) as they take on a bounty in a stand-alone mini-episode.
The action-packed space Western focuses on three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys,” all trying to outrun the past and ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price.
The teaser directed by Greg Jardin, starts off aboard the Bebop with Jet, Faye, and Spike getting the call for a new bounty. The two chase down a target and show off a lot of action sequences reminiscent of the original 1998 anime.
The whole clip, set to the show’s iconic music, plays around with the comic book bars and split screen in all sorts of fun ways. The characters use the bars to transition smoothly between scenes, grab them as weapons, and chat with each other even if they aren’t in the same location.
Take note, this clip isn't part of the show's first season, but rather a mini-episode. An official trailer will be released next week, according to Netflix.
At any rate, the new teaser captures the tone and style of the original Cowboy Bebop anime, which is well-known for mixing genres (space opera, neo-noir and Western) and for its homage to 1970s action films. Check out the teaser below.
The live-action Cowboy Bebop series will debut on Netflix on Nov. 19.
For those who want to see how it all began, all 26 episodes of the original anime will also be dropping on the streamer on Oct. 21 ahead of the live-action series.
