'The Office' is reportedly getting a reboot with original showrunner involved
It looks like the hit mockumentary sitcom The Office is going to be back in business as it is reportedly on its way to television screens for a reboot.
Regarded as one of the most successful and critically acclaimed sitcoms of its time, The Office aired on NBC in 2005 and spanned a total of nine seasons before it ultimately reached its conclusion in 2013.
However, according to Puck News, the show is set to return as the Hollywood writers’ strike is now nearing its end, which has shut down nearly all productions and film sets.
The report speculated that original showrunner Greg Daniels will be involved in revamping the series.
"Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office, for instance. Disney’s Dana Walden will finally be able to announce the return of her BFF Ryan Murphy from Netflix. A ton of high-profile movie scripts will come in. The industry will chug back to normal," read the article.
Daniels previously shared with Collider that while NBC "certainly would be very excited" to do a potential sequel or spin-off to The Office, he still has some reservations about what longtime fans would think.
"[The Office] was such a wonderful and rare experience that obviously you don't want to just go back to it and kind of possibly disappoint people when right now, they couldn't be happier about it," Daniels said.
"I can't tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don't think it would be the same characters. I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, [b]ut I don't know if that would be something people would want or not, it's hard to tell," he continued.
It is still uncertain if any of The Office's original cast would return for the new project, which includes the likes of Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms, and more.
Throughout its 201-episode run, the series earned numerous accolodations from prestigious award-giving bodies, such as the Peabodys, the Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globes, and the Primetime Emmys.
