New LEGO World Map is largest set ever

LEGO has launched its largest set ever featuring a highly intricate and customizable world map that will have fans charting their travels at home for a while.

The travel-inspired LEGO World Map consists of 11,695 pieces and can be displayed on a wall like other sets from the puzzle-like mosaic LEGO Art series.

Like previous art sets featuring pop culture portraits of Iron Man, Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles and Star Wars' Sith, the map set consists mainly of 1×1 round tiles which create continents and oceans on 40 interconnecting base plates.

LEGO’s 31203 World Map set comes barely six months after the toymaker released its previous largest set, the Colosseum, which had 9,036 pieces.

The world map, measuring 25.5 inches in height and 40.5 inches in width, is divided into three sections that can be customized three different ways, allowing users to place their own geographic location or favorite part of the world in the center of the map.

The oceans on the map can be switched around if users don’t want to stick with the accurate rendering of the ocean’s floor that comes with the instructions.

The brick-built pins can also be customized to mark out destinations the user has already visited, or highlight those still on the builder’s bucket list—to give the unique art masterpiece a personal touch—just like a travel scratch map or bulletin board.

The set also comes with a coffee-table style instruction booklet, a white brick-built frame and two hanging elements.

According to Fiorella Groves, creative lead for LEGO Art, the World Map set was designed for Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL) looking for a way to cope with the lockdowns brought about by the pandemic.

“We know that our adult fans love to travel, but many haven’t been able to do so for over a year now. We thought that there was no better way of helping explore the world while relaxing in the comfort of their home than by allowing them to build, rebuild, plan and reminisce through building,” said Groves.

“We hope the LEGO Art World Map will inspire new adventures in some, and help others relive and celebrate wonderful travel memories from the past,” she added.

The LEGO World Map set costs $249.99 (P11,900) and will be available at LEGO.com and in LEGO stores on June 1, 2021.
