Last chance! Japan's life-size Gundam bids farewell this March with final events

Only a few more days 'til you can see the Gundam Factory Yokohama (GFY) in real life.

According to an announcement, the popular attraction has been gearing up since late February to hype up the 59-foot Moving Gundam replica and feature it in various places around the city in Japan as it closes on March 31.

Time Out reported that there are rumors that the macha "may be dismantled and transported to Osaka to be showcased at the Gundam Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka."

Approaching its last day, special performances such as "Moving Gundam" and "Haro" will be featured on the large Ferris wheel Cosmo Clock 21 at Yokohama Cosmo World theme park.

You can also score a limited-edition sticker when you purchase a ticket to the urban circulation ropeway, Yokohama Air Cabin.  

On its last day, dubbed "Gundam Factory Yokohama Grand Finale – To The New Stage," guests will be treated to a special art show featuring 1,000 drones with fireworks. 

Mobile Suit Gundam director Yoshiyuki Tomino will also deliver a speech on the same day. 

The tickets are now sold out, but if you happen to be in the city before this month ends, you can stroll around Yokohama as there will be photo spots and live performances of Gundam series songs in the city.

GFY first opened to the public in December 2020 and was especially popular for its moving Gundam statue coupled with musical themes, story settings, new poses, and movements. It was originally meant to close in March 2022 but extended until March 31, 2024. 

Four years since opening its doors, it has welcomed over 1.5 million visitors as of February 2024.
