Jason Momoa reveals new costume for ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’
Aquaman star Jason Momoa has given fans a first look at his darker costume in the upcoming DC superhero film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The actor took to Instagram early Monday (Sept. 6) to share two photos. The first image shows Momoa in the classic green and orange costume reminiscent of Aquaman's original comic book look. The second photo features Momoa in a sleeker and darker stealth suit with armor.
The Game of Thrones and Dune star, who is currently in London filming the sequel, captioned his post, "Second round. New suit. More action. #aquaman Aloha.”
Momoa is reprising his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, which will be the thirteenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film also stars Amber Heard as Mera, alongside Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is directed by James Wan, who previously helmed the first film which grossed about $1.148 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing DCEU film and the highest-grossing film based on a DC Comics character. The script is written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who also worked on the first film.
Wan, whose previous films include Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring films, has previously said the sequel touches on his horror roots, according to a report by Deadline.
“Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires,” Wan said. “You can take the boy out of horror, but you can never take the horror out of the boy.”
Wan said the change in tone for the film comes “partially because they were not familiar with the comic book, which deals in this very lurid, strange world.”
“People were taken aback that I didn’t throw all that stuff away and make a dark, heavy film. But I didn’t feel that would have been right for it. So with the second film, I feel it will be easier for people to accept where we go because I’ve already laid the foundation,” Wan said.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is slated for a theatrical release on Dec. 16, 2022.
