Warner Bros. mulls several DC spin-off series for HBO Max
Marvel’s dominance in developing a superhero film and TV multiverse is being challenged.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. announced that it would release its entire movie line-up on HBO Max alongside their traditional theatrical releases. Now, the studio revealed another surprise—every movie that premieres on screen may come with a DC spin-off series.
DC Films president Walter Hamada said the studio is looking to produce more HBO Max spin-off series that align with theatrical film releases. These spin-offs will be television shows that run exclusively on HBO Max and intertwine with their movie counterparts.
"With every movie that we're looking at now, we are thinking, 'What's the potential Max spin-off?'" Hamada told The New York Times during a recent interview.
The candid admission reveals Warner Bros. extensive plans of releasing more material on top of the planned four theatrical DC films (think big-budget blockbusters), plus two HBO Max-exclusive films (less expensive productions) per year, starting in 2022.
Currently, Warner’s upcoming DC films The Batman and The Suicide Squad sequel are already scheduled to have their own spin-off TV shows on HBO Max.
Other original DC programs like the upcoming Green Lantern and Justice League Dark series will also be released via the streaming platform. Zack Snyder's long-awaited director's cut of Justice League is scheduled to arrive on HBO Max early next year.
