Professional wrestler-turned-actor John Cena is retiring from WWE.

The 47-year-old made the announcement in a surprise appearance at a premium live event, Money in the Bank, on July 6 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In a twist to the title of his entrance theme, "The Time is Now," John came out in a shirt that read "The Last Time is Now" and "Farewell Tour."

"Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE," he said.

His retirement from in-ring competition, however, will not take effect immediately as he'll have his last run in the company in 2025.

"This farewell does not end tonight, it is filled with opportunity... And along with history-making firsts, we are going to build so many lasts," the actor said.

"The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last, the 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last. In Las Vegas, WrestleMania 2025 will be the last WrestleMania I compete in."

John was met with chants of "Thank you, Cena!" from the Toronto crowd.

The Peacekeeper star prominently made a cameo at WrestleMania XL earlier in April where he had a quick face-off with actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

John made his WWE debut in 2002 in a match against Kurt Angle. Throughout his career, he became a 16-time world champion and headlined the WWE's flagship event, WrestleMania, five times.

Apart from professional wrestling, John has also starred in several films including The Marine, Trainwreck, Ferdinand, Blockers, Bumblebee, and Fast X. He also currently stars in the DC Extended Universe series Peacemaker.

Earlier in March, the actor was a presenter at the 2024 Academy Awards for best costume design where he walked on stage seemingly without any clothes on.
