Twin multiverse anime films get same day release; ending changes based on watch order

Published May 26, 2022 3:56 pm

Two multiverse anime films, where the ending changes depending on the watch order, are set to be released simultaneously in theaters in Japan on Oct. 7, 2022.

Viewers will be faced with a choice of which film to watch first, which will impact the ending of the story.

Fresh off the success of films that deal with the multiverse like Marvel Studio’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All at Once, the twin anime films explores the themes of romance in parallel universes.

The anime films were adapted from two Japanese science fiction novels, Boku ga Aishita Subete no Kimi e and Kimi o Aishita Hitori no Boku e, both written by Yomoji Otono and published on the same day on June 23, 2016.

Covers of the novels by Yomoji Otono which the anime films are based on.

The films are animated by two different studios. The first movie, To All of You That I Loved, will be animated by Bakken Record. The second movie, To the Only Me Who Loved You, will be animated by TMS Entertainment, the same studio that animated the likes of Dr. Stone, Rent-A-Girlfriend, and Fruits Basket.

Both are set in a world where people routinely swing between slightly different parallel worlds

Boku ga Aishita Subete no Kimi e (To Every You I’ve Loved Before) tells the story of Koyomi Takasaki, a university student who lives with his mother following his parents’ divorce. Due to his social awkwardness and devotion to studies, he is unable to make friends. One day, he is approached by his classmate Kazune Takigawa, who reveals she has travelled from a parallel world where she and Koyomi are lovers.

Kimi o Aishita Hitori no Boku e (To The Solitary Me That Loved You) follows the story of Koyomi Hidaka, who lives with his father after his parents’ divorce. One day, Koyomi meets a girl named Shiori Satou at the research institute where his father works, and the two start to develop feelings for each other. Unfortunately, Koyomi and Shiori’s parents remarry, so the two attempt to escape to a parallel universe where they can be together.

While commenting on the film’s release, Yomoji Otono, the author of the light novel said: “This story is born from my own fantasy when I was in the second year of junior high school. In the infinite number of parallel worlds that exist, one of the happiest futures that this fantasy has led me to is the one that will be made into these films.”

“Two films are being released simultaneously. They are made in a way that you can watch them from either side, and the order in which you watch the two films will greatly change the way you feel about them. I hope you will enjoy the choice you can only make once, which of the two films to see first,” said Yomoji Otono.
