Art collectors want to buy bits of Koons' shattered 'Balloon Dog' worth $42,000 (over P2 million)
Even though the glass sculpture by renowned artist Jeff Koons had been reduced into pieces after a collector accidentally knocked it over, it looks like the $42,000 piece (over P2 million) still has some value left in it.
In a report by CBS News, Cédric Boero, the district manager of the artwork's exhibitor Bel-Air Fine Art, revealed that interest in the shattered "Balloon Dog" sculpture still remained as some art collectors are willing to fork over some cash for its pieces.
"Some collectors offered to buy the shards; we are still receiving offers as we speak," Boero said.
One collector who has expressed interest in the bits is pop artist Stephen Gamson, who wrote on his Instagram account that he "tried to purchase the broken sculpture," adding that it had a "really cool story" behind it.
As the incident drew much attention, CBS News surmised that this hype could lead to the remaining balloon dog sculptures becoming "more valuable."
According to Boero, the piece had not been knocked over because it was touched. Rather, it was due to several unfortunate circumstances that led to the accident, which some believed was a deliberate stunt.
"The collector never intended to break the sculpture, in fact she never touched it with her hands. It was the opening cocktail, lots of people were on our booth; she gave, unintentionally, a little kick in the pedestal, which was enough to cause the sculpture to fall down." Boero explained.
Koons' famous "balloon dog" series comes in a total of 799 editions, all with vivid colors and varying sizes, from less than a foot (30 centimeters) in height to over 10 feet (three meters) tall. They are considered as some of the most expensive contemporary art pieces ever sold.
