Brendan Fraser to play villain in DC’s Batgirl movie
Brendan Fraser is headed to Gotham City.
Deadline reports that the former star of The Mummy is set to join Leslie Grace in Warner Bros. and DC Films’ upcoming film Batgirl.
Although not confirmed, sources believe Fraser will be playing the supervillain Firefly in the DC extended Universe (DCEU) film slated for 2022.
In the Height’s Leslie Grace is on board to play Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl. Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are helming the production.
The film will be released on HBO Max, marking one of the first major DC properties to debut exclusively on the streamer.
While no official plot details have been released, it is known that Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, will be the character behind the cape in this version of Batgirl. Gordon is the most established version of the Batgirl character and was first introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane.
At the peak of his career, Fraser starred in a string of films in the ’90s and early ’00s, including Encino Man (1992), George of the Jungle (1997), The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and Crash (2004) before disappearing from the public eye.
Fraser, who left acting after facing multiple surgeries and battling depression, has made a bit of a Hollywood comeback in recent years. He recently landed the lead role in Darren Aronofsky’s next film The Whale and was cast in a key role in Martin Scorsese's next film Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. He was also recently seen in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move.
While the role will be Fraser’s first time on the big screen in the DC universe, it is his second role in the DCEU. Fraser also voices Cliff Steele, also known as Robotman, in the series Doom Patrol, which started in 2019.
