Former 'Lois & Clark' star Dean Cain says bisexual Superman is 'bandwagoning' and not 'brave'
Former Superman actor Dean Cain has slammed DC Comics, saying the latest incarnation of the Man of Steel as a bisexual is just an attempt to hop on a trend.
DC Comics announced on Oct. 11 that Jon Kent, the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane will be openly bisexual in an upcoming issue.
"They said it’s bold and a new direction, I say it’s bandwagoning," Cain, who played Superman in Lois & Clark in the 90s, said in an interview on Fox News.
He continued to list other characters in the comics, including Robin, Supergirl, and the new Captain America, who came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community to justify his statements.
"I don’t think it’s bold or brave or taking it to a new direction. If they had done this 20 years ago, that would’ve been brave," he added.
"Brave would’ve been having him fight for the rights of gay people in Iran where they’ll throw you off a building for the offense of being gay," Cain said.
The 55-year-old actor went on to say the comics should have Superman deal with other issues like fighting "the injustices that created the refugees whose deportation he's protesting."
"There's real evil in this world today, real corruption and government overreach," he continued. "It'd be great to tackle those issues. I'd like to see the character doing that."
His statements didn't get the best reactions from users on social media.
Many of us were proud when @StarTrek introduced @wcruz73 ‘s doctor, who happened to be gay, on #startrekdiscovery . #GeneRoddenberry imagined a more inclusive future. Hope my friend @RealDeanCain will see the value in that. https://t.co/9ZsHcMMDZA

So Dean Cain apparently is upset that the new Superboy in the comics is bisexual.

I used to be upset that Dean Cain was straight but he has definitely cured me of that.
