BLACKPINK appointed as advocates for UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
From being global ambassadors of luxury brands to breaking records in K-pop, it seems that there is no way for K-pop girl group BLACKPINK to go but up.
On Saturday, Sept. 18, the United Nations (UN) announced on Twitter that the quartet has been appointed as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) advocates. The girl group is the first Asian act to reach this milestone.

In a statement by the UN, BLACKPINK said, “We truly believe in the importance of collective action. We will only be able to make a difference when we come together, for the good of everyone. Now is the time to act for a safer tomorrow and a better future.”

The four-member girl group is one of the newly appointed SDG advocates by the UN. They are joined by STEM activist Valentina Muñoz Rabanal, screenwriter Richard Curtis, and Microsoft Corporation president Brad Smith, among others.
In February 2021, the girl group was appointed as advocates for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). They also released a video to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change.
Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, is a 2015 project by the UN that sets 17 SDGs to ensure “all people enjoy peace and prosperity” by 2030. It serves as a “universal call to action” to build a better world for future generations.
BLACKPINK is a four-member girl group composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group is best known for their hit tracks As If It’s Your Last, How You Like That, Kill This Love, and Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du.
