‘Midnight Mass’ creator to adapt Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ at Netflix

Midnight Mass writer-director Mike Flanagan has set his eyes on his next horror project for Netflix.

In a social media post on Thursday, the streaming platform announced that the man behind The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor is set to adapt Edgar Allan Poe's short Gothic story The Fall of the House of Usher.

First published in 1839, Poe's classic supernatural horror story revolves around an unidentified narrator and his friend who claims that their mansion is sentient and is responsible for his deteriorating mental condition.

The short story was later included in Poe's collection of Gothic short stories, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque.

Other details about the upcoming eight-episode horror series remain under wraps as of this writing. However, Netflix confirmed that the upcoming limited series will be based on "multiple works" by Poe, which means that the project would probably feature other stories by the Gothic author.

Meanwhile, Flanagan, who will serve as the project's writer and executive producer, will share the director duties with Hill House's Michael Fimognari, whose previous works include Stephen King's Doctor Sleep and Ouija: Origin of Evil, to name a few.

The Fall of the House of Usher will be Flanagan's fifth project with Netflix. Aside from adapting Poe's short story, the acclaimed director is also working on a Netflix series adaptation of Christopher Pike's 1994 young adult book The Midnight Club, which tells the story of five terminally ill teenagers at a hospice who meet every night to tell each other scary stories.
