PlayStation 5 shortage likely to continue through 2022 – report

It seems like the PlayStation 5 supply shortage is far from over as Sony expects the popular game console to be in tight supply through 2022.

As reported by Bloomberg, the Japanese tech company said that the stock situation of PlayStation 5 may not stabilize at least until next year as the demand for the console continues to surge worldwide. 

“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki reportedly said at a briefing.

So far, the Tokyo-based company has already sold 7.8 million PlayStation 5 units and aims to sell at least 14.8 million more during the current fiscal year. If things go according to plan, the current pace of PlayStation 5 may match the sales figures of its PS4 predecessor, which has sold over 115 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has been in short supply ever since it was launched in November 2020. The stock situation has been attributed to the global shortage of semiconductors, which hampered the production of several game consoles. To recall, the president of Nintendo also warned of possible Nintendo Switch shortages this year as the components needed for the hybrid console remain in tight supply.
