The fictional Hyosan High School from ‘All of Us Are Dead’ was built from scratch on set
The Hyosan High School is one of the highlights from Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead since it is where most of the gruesome action takes place. As director Lee Jaekyoo shared, the fictional school is actually a four-story set piece that was built from scratch on set.
The director revealed in a behind-the-scenes look that the fictional school was built from scratch to make viewers think about solutions on how to survive a zombie apocalypse. “We tried to incorporate many different tools in this for a fun viewing experience.”
Since Hyosan High School was the place where Patient Zero was first discovered, Jaekyoo said he wanted the school to look “animated” before the nail-biting and bloody scenes. “We tried to make the school look bright and animated at first. We gave a lot of thought to lighting and colors for every single space.”
The location of the fictional school was also considered as a tool to “perfectly convey our intention.” “We built a set 100 meters long so we can safely say that we built a four-story school,” Jaekyoo added.
The director shared that the use of green uniforms as a contrast to the bloody scenes is a way to “show the intensity” of the series.
Jaekyoo also revealed in a virtual press conference that Hyosan High School feels like an integral part of the cast, saying the filming location is significant when it comes to the zombie genre.
“There’s a lot of blood and that’s why I felt we needed a set of our own. When we looked at the set, it’s one hundred meters wide. It was basically like a four-story school building inside the set and we would just be there all the time. So, it felt like we were really going to school, but a really gloomy school,” the director said.
Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead is a 12-episode series that revolves around high school students who are thrust into a life-and-death situation against an intensifying zombie apocalypse.
The modern zombie K-drama includes Yoon Chanyoung, Park Jihoo, Park Solomon, Cho Yihyun, Lee Yoomi, Yoo Insoo, Ha Seungri, Lee Eunsaem, and Son Sangyeon.
