‘Aquaman 2’ starts filming

The Aquaman film sequel, titled Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, as revealed by director James Wan, has finally begun production.

In an Instagram post, Wan revealed a photo of a clapperboard set down in an icy cave with the caption “Day One.” On the board, instead of the film’s title, the word “Necrus” can be read. This could be a hint of what the film’s plot is and what DC fans can expect for Aquaman’s next adventure.

It seems like The Lost Kingdom and Necrus are related in a way. In the previous film, the six kingdoms of Atlantis have already been revealed except for the seventh one. This means that the “lost kingdom” could be Necrus.

Necrus, in the DC comics, is similar to Atlantis, a dome-like kingdom found underwater. However, unlike Atlantis, Necrus is unstable in nature. It only appears at certain areas and at random times, this is because it periodically enters the Earth’s orbit as it roams through the galaxy. Necrus is also ruled by Mongo, a tyrant king who imposes a militaristic society.

The sequel is directed by The Conjuring universe creator James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Wan has also stated that the storyline will be more serious and will feature horror-like elements in the theme.

Jason Momoa is set to reprise his role as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, along with Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, and much to fans surprise and disappointment, Amber Heard as Mera.

Heard is still facing backlash online because of her alleged controversy with ex-husband Johnny Depp. Due to domestic abuse allegations, Depp has lost a significant amount of Hollywood projects especially his more well-known roles as Captain Jack Sparrow and Gellert Grindelwald. In light of the events, Amber Heard was then accused of allegedly faking the abuse stories.

A petition signed by over 1.8 million people on Change.org, is begging Warner Bros. to remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2. However, Warner Bros. seems to have turned a blind-eye to the issue.
