‘Smallville’ animated series in the works with Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum
Smallville actor Tom Welling recently revealed that he's currently working with co-star Michael Rosenbaum to bring their beloved show back into the small screen.
In a Cameo video posted on Instagram, the 44-year-old actor said that he's developing an animated version of The CW's Smallville which would feature the iconic superhero series' original cast members.
"Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life, and use as many of the original cast members as possible. Don't tell anybody, though. It's a secret. We're still working on it," Welling said.
The series, which ran for a total of 217 episodes over 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011, starred Welling as a young Clark Kent opposite Rosenbaum, who portrayed the role of Superman's foe Lex Luthor. Other cast includes Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan), Erica Durance (Lois Lane), Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent), John Schneider (Jonathan Kent), John Glover (Lionel Luthor), Justin Hartley (Green Arrow), Laura Vandervoort (Kara Zor-El), and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy Olsen).
Although the actor didn't reveal other details about the show, some fans are speculating that the upcoming series might feature the story of the Smallville Season 11 graphic novel, which takes place six months after the events of the show's final episode and features fan-favorite characters such as Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), Chloe Sullivan-Queen, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and General Lane.
After his stint as a young Kal-El ended several years ago, Welling later reprised his role as Clark Kent during The CW's Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event in 2019. Previously, Welling also welcomed the idea of reviving his character to play alongside Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' The Batman.
"Yeah, I think that would be cool," Welling said. "My buddy Rob Pattinson, he is going to be the new Batman. I would love it. It would be fun to be the Superman that shows up in his movie, just because he is a friend of mine. Yeah, who knows?"
