‘Dexter’ revival drops teaser trailer and release date
America's favorite serial killer Dexter Morgan is officially coming out of retirement in 2021.
Showtime has dropped the first teaser for the 10-episode limited series, confirming the show’s revival this fall.
Dexter, which originally ran for eight seasons on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, told the story of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a forensic technician specializing in bloodstain pattern analysis for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department, who led a secret life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down murderers who slipped through the cracks of the justice system.
The revival series picks up nearly a decade after the controversial series finale, with the serial killer now residing in the fictional Upstate New York small town of Iron Lake.
The teaser for the series, titled “Misunderstood” echoes the final shot of the original series, which showed Dexter retiring to Oregon after faking his death.
The 30-second teaser opens with a picturesque winter shot of the woods, before panning over a fire burning outside and into a cabin window. The teaser eventually reveals Dexter standing in the window, and a reflection in the glass that shows us that old habits die hard, ending with his signature creepy smile and title credits.
The trailer is set to Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Nina Simone, a song with lyrics that include "I'm just a soul whose intentions are good/Please don't let me be misunderstood."
Veteran character actor Clancy Brown (Carnivale and Billions) will play the revival’s primary antagonist Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of Iron Lake.
The cast also includes Goliath‘s Julia Jones (as Iron Lake’s first Native American Chief of Police), Underground and Jane the Virgin alum Alano Miller (as an Iron Lake PD sergeant) and Lovecraft Country‘s Jamie Chung (as a famous true-crime podcaster from Los Angeles who finds herself caught up in the still-murky central mystery).
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the revival announcement, returning showrunner Clyde Phillips said the new series would not undo any specific perceived wrongs from that much-maligned finale.
“We want this to not be Dexter Season 9. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale,” said Philipps.

The new Dexter Limited Series is expected to premiere in Fall of 2021. All past seasons are available to stream on Showtime.
