Can’t decide what to watch? Netflix’s ‘Play Something’ feature will do it for you
Streaming giant Netflix is known for offering a wide variety of content that we all enjoy, from kilig-inducing K-dramas, action-packed Hollywood blockbusters, to exhilarating Animé titles.
But sometimes we just want to relax and watch something without having to stress over all the overwhelming choices available on the service.
If you've ever found yourself plagued by indecision, mindlessly scrolling looking for something to watch every night, Netflix’s latest feature may just be the thing for you.
Netflix is officially rolling out the “Play Something” feature today (April 29), adding a button that will automatically suggest new shows and movies that you’ve never watched before.
In a blog announcement by Cameron Johnson, director of Product Innovation at Netflix, the Play Something feature is described as a unique and exciting way to discover new titles based on what you’ve watched in the past.
The streamer also released a couple of videos showing how the new product feature works.
According to Netflix, the Play Something button will appear in several places on Netflix’s app, including underneath your profile when you log in, the left-side navigation bar, and in the tenth row of Netflix’s homepage.
When you hit the ‘Play Something’ button, you’ll be instantly met with a series or film that the streamer knows you’ll love based on what you’ve watched before. Or with one more click you can ‘Play Something Else’ and get:
- A brand new series or film,
- A series or film you’re already watching,
- A series or film on your list, or
- An unfinished series or film you may want to revisit.
For members that use screen-readers, Play Something fully supports Text-to-Speech (TTS). To discover your next favorite film or show with Play Something using TTS, visit Netflix’s Accessibility help center for more information on how to enable this feature through your TV device settings.
According to Netflix, the new feature isn’t just a button that recommends what to watch randomly. The feature uses your existing profile and taste in shows and movies to find similar titles based on what kinds of things you already watch. The button will show a variety of "algorithmically curated content, including entirely new shows and movies, series or films you’ve already started, or something on your watchlist."
This just goes to show that sometimes the best choice is not to choose. Happy binge-watching!
